Madam C. J.Walker was born as Sarah Breedlove in Delta, Louisiana on December 23, 1867. She was one of six children born to Owen and Minerva Breedlove. As her parents and older siblings were were born into slavery, “The Madam” was the first child in the family be be born into freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Madam C. J. Walker was a successful American entrepreneur and philanthropist. She is considered the first female self-made millionaire in America. She made her fortune by developing and marketing a successful line of beauty and hair products for black women under her company Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company.

Madam C. J. Walker died from complications from hypertension on Sunday, May 25, 1919, at her Westchester County (New York) estate, also known as Villa Lewaro. She was only 51-years-old.
